Auklets

It is quite a small seabird which can be found around the Aleutian Islands and on some of the islands around Siberia.

The Whiskered Auklet is a nocturnal bird which feels its way around and back to their nests at night by using its long whiskers.

This adult bird clings to the green vegetation beside a large rock on the Aleutian Islands.

An adult Whiskered Auklet is black in color with black crests coming from its forehead and three white plumes adorning its face.

Its bill is red in colour with the tip being a much paler shade.

The Crested Auklet is recognized primarily by two characters in the breeding season.

The first is its crest, a group of bristle feathers located above its eye on the top of its head.

The second is a social odor that the auklets produce during the breeding season, which has been described as smelling like tangerines.

Crested Auklets are planktivores and their diet consists mainly of krill, but they also eat copepods, pteropods, amphipods and larval fish.

The Least Auklet one of the most abundant seabirds in the world, with an estimated global population of around nine million birds.

It is also known as the Knob-billed Auklet.

These birds are voracious eaters, consuming 86% of their body weight in food each day.

They are able to locate their nest sites from the previous season, even when covered with snow.

They sit where the nest is and take possession of it once the snow has melted from it.

Their preferred habitats include rocky coasts and open ocean.
